Support Detroit's future workforce through robotics, innovation, and STEM education.
We are working to create the Southeast Michigan Robotics & Innovation Center (SEMRIC)—a dedicated space where students from Detroit, Grosse Pointe, and across Southeast Michigan can design, build, and compete in robotics.
But we must act quickly to secure the space before this opportunity is lost.
This effort is about more than robotics—it’s about building the future workforce of Southeast Michigan. As industries such as automotive, manufacturing, and technology continue to evolve, there is a growing need for skilled engineers, programmers, technicians, and trades professionals. This center will help develop that pipeline by giving students hands-on, real-world experience that prepares them for high-demand careers.
Robotics programs across Southeast Michigan are growing rapidly—but access to proper facilities has not kept up. A critical gap exists:
As a result, students are expected to compete at a high level without ever having the opportunity to practice on a full field. In any other sport, this would be unthinkable. Robotics is the sport where all kids go pro.
A football team would never play a game without practicing on a full field—yet robotics teams are asked to do exactly that. Providing access to a full-size practice field is not just an upgrade—it is a fundamental requirement for equitable participation in robotics.
We are building a shared robotics and innovation center in Detroit that will:
Provide a full-size competition practice field
Serve students from Detroit, Grosse Pointe, and across Southeast Michigan
Welcome teams from across the region
Offer space for building, testing, and collaboration
Support mentorship, workforce development, and hands-on learning
This project contributes to Detroit’s ongoing revitalization while helping build the next generation of engineers, programmers, and skilled trades professionals.
This effort is already gaining momentum. Through the support of Senator Kevin Hertel, $75,000 in state funding has been secured to help advance this project. This early investment reflects the importance of expanding access to STEM education and workforce development opportunities in Southeast Michigan, and it gives us a strong foundation as we work to raise the remaining funds needed to bring this vision to life.
We are raising funds to purchase a property in Detroit and begin using it immediately.
This includes:
Property acquisition
Equipment, work tables, and storage
Security systems to ensure a safe environment
This allows students to begin building and learning this year
Our long-term vision is a purpose-built robotics center featuring:
Full-size competition fields for elementary, middle and high school levels
Bleachers for spectators and events
Team pit and repair areas
Shared tools and workspaces
A two-story design with viewing areas overlooking the FRC field
Workforce development programming
Sustainability funding/endowment
This will create a one-of-a-kind resource for teams across Southeast Michigan
